WebDictionary.co.uk ("we", "us") is a free online English dictionary. This policy explains what information is collected when you use the site, how it is used and the choices you have. If you have a question about your privacy, please use our contact form.

Information we collect

When you browse the site

You do not need an account to use WebDictionary.co.uk and we do not ask for personal details to look up words. Like almost every website, our hosting provider and our content delivery and security provider process technical information needed to deliver pages and protect the site from abuse, such as your IP address, browser type, the pages you request and the time of your visit. This information is kept only for a short period in server and security logs.

When you contact us

If you use the contact form we receive your name, email address and message. We use them only to read and reply to your message. Messages are delivered to us by email and are not stored on our web servers. To protect the form from spam, it uses Cloudflare Turnstile, which checks that the form is being used by a person.

Cookies and similar technologies

Cookies are small files stored on your device. We use the following:

Advertising (Google AdSense)

We show advertising provided by Google AdSense to keep the site free.

Analytics (Google Analytics)

We use Google Analytics to understand how the site is used, for example which pages are popular, so that we can improve it. Google Analytics collects information such as the pages you visit, how long you stay and the type of device you use. You can prevent Google Analytics from collecting your data with the Google Analytics opt-out browser add-on.

Security

Our security provider, Cloudflare, may set strictly necessary cookies to protect the site against malicious traffic. These do not track you for advertising.

Your choices

Where the law requires it, for example for visitors in the UK and European Economic Area, you will be asked for your consent before non-essential cookies are used, and you can change your choices at any time. You can also block or delete cookies in your browser settings; the dictionary will still work without them.

Who we share information with

We do not sell your personal information. Information is processed on our behalf by the service providers that run the site: our hosting provider (Railway), our content delivery and security provider (Cloudflare), our email delivery provider for contact messages, and Google for advertising and analytics. Some of these providers may process information outside the UK, with appropriate safeguards in place.

How long we keep information

Technical logs are kept for a short period for security and troubleshooting. Contact messages are kept only as long as needed to deal with your enquiry. Google's retention of advertising and analytics data is described in Google's privacy policy.

Your rights

Under UK data protection law you have the right to ask for a copy of the personal information we hold about you, to ask us to correct or delete it, and to object to or restrict how it is used. To make a request, please use our contact form. If you are unhappy with how your information has been handled, you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk.

Children

The site is suitable for all ages, but it is not directed at children under 13 and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them.

Some pages link to other websites, such as Wikipedia. We are not responsible for the privacy practices of other websites.

We may update this policy from time to time. The date at the top of the page shows when it was last changed.
